Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA)

The Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) of 2003 provides for the analysis of incidents
and the effects of sexual abuse in Federal, State, and local institutions and to provide
information, resources, recommendations, and funding to protect individuals from sexual
abuse. This Act applies to incidents of prisoner/prisoner and staff/prisoner sexual abuse.
Participants in all incidents will be referred to as perpetrator/victim. The Salt Lake County
Jail has a zero-tolerance policy towards all PREA incidents and it is the policy of the jail
to actively and vigorously prevent, report, and treat incidents of prisoner sexual abuse.
