"Salt Lake County wants to expend our economic development efforts with purpose. For too long we have been reactive, accepting, even incenting, company relocations and expansions without a macro view of how that relocation or expansion fits without our community's fabric. We want to embark upon new economic development efforts with an eye toward true market expansion which means bridging the divide between international marketplaces and our small to medium size business community." --Mayor Ben McAdams
The Global Cities Initiative is a multi-phase project aimed at creating a more robust and resilient regional economy through increased interaction with the global market. After an in-depth market assessment, in April 2016, the county completed phase 1 and released Salt Lake County's Regional Export Plan. Currently the county is working on phase 2 of the process, or developing a plan to increase foreign direct investment (FDI) in the region. After phase 2 research is complete, the county will launch a comprehensive Global Trade and Investment Plan that will merge findings from both phases of the project.
