Located on Cougar Lane, between 5400 South and 6200 South, lives Oquirrh Park. The Utah Olympic Oval and Kearns Oquirrh Park Fitness Center reside in this area as well. Three major projects are underway:
Connector Building – A collaborative project between the Utah Olympic Oval, Kearns Oquirrh Park Fitness Center, Salt Lake County, and the State of Utah. The facility will be built between the two current structures. It will house training facilities for the US Speed Skating team, work out rooms for both the Oval and KOPFC, and meeting rooms for the community groups. Athletic Campus – An early draft plan was created to consider adding economic development, housing, and amenities to the Oquirrh Park area. A survey was conducted to collect community feedback (see below).Oquirrh Park Masterplan – Developed by Salt Lake County Parks & Recreation division, and adopted in 2015, the plan calls for additional playgrounds, trails and other amenities to the County portion of the park. Proposition A (a parks bond) was approved by County residents in November 2016 and will invest $4.5 million into the park in 2017. Some aspects of the Athletic Campus plan may be included in the Masterplan moving forward.
Camp Kearns, nestled in the north-west corner of the Kearns community, houses the last remaining structures from the WWII military camp in Kearns. Over the years it has been a harbor for growing small businesses, and an incubator for others. With its success, the area has also seen a massive decline in maintenance. Roads are dilapidated and non-existent in some places. The Office of Townships is in the process of getting those roads fixed to better enable beneficial development in the neighborhood.
Home revitalization opportunities are always available for Kearns residents to capitalize. There are few specific projects that are underway, and organizations that are widely known throughout the community.
Habitat for Humanity – Field of Dreams is a 20-home, affordable housing development in the southeast quadrant of Kearns. Habitat for Humanity provides other revitalization efforts that target construction and maintenance of failing homes. Community Development Corporation of Utah (CDCUtah) – CDCUtah is an affordable housing provider. In Kearns, this agency has built several Idea Houses, and plans to increase the amount. This program takes distressed homes and rehabilitates them. Using a holistic approach of sustainability, accessibility, and affordability. Homes are displayed to the community, and serves as models for renovations that can be made to improve safety and energy efficiency while reducing crime throughout the community.Green and Healthy Homes – Salt Lake County’s Green and Healthy Homes programs aims to implement strategies that support clean, safe, stable, and energy efficient homes. This entity works in tandem with other agencies, such as Habitat and CDCUtah. All work together to meet the needs of moderate-low income families.
