A criminal record creates barriers to employment, housing, and other opportunities. Getting an expungement—or “cleaning up” your record—can be a complicated and expensive process. Although clean slate legislation has been passed in the State of Utah, it requires the criminal justice system to build a process to automatically expunge records. This process will not be ready for some time. In the meanwhile, Salt Lake County can help.
On July 8, 2020, Salt Lake County Mayor's Office of Criminal Justice Initiatives in partnership with the Salt Lake County District Attorney's Office, Utah State Courts, the Utah Department of Public Safety, and volunteer attorneys from the Utah State Bar will host a free remote Expungement Day event. Volunteer attorneys will be available to:
- assist participants in determining their eligibility for an expungement,
- help with filling out the paperwork to begin this process, and
- discuss other options with those not immediately eligible to expunge their records.
This project was supported by Utah Commission on Criminal and Juvenile Justice Grant No. 2016-DJ-BX0772 awarded by the Bureau of Justice Assistance.
