Salt Lake County Expungement Navigator Project

We help community members navigate the expungement process by:

  • holding periodic Expungement Day Events where volunteer attorneys assist participants in determining their eligibility for expungement and discuss other options with those not immediately eligible.
  • providing funds for BCI application and certificate fees through a federal grant to make this process less cost prohibitive.
  • providing navigation services throughout the year.

What is expungement?

A criminal record creates barriers to employment, housing, and other opportunities. But getting an expungement—or “cleaning up” your record—can be a complicated and expensive process.

Program Impact:

Since April 2019 when this program began, over 2,350 individuals have received expungement assistance (see graphic below).

What’s Next?

We are developing a step-by-step guide to the expungement process that will be beta tested in the Fall of 2020. This accessible and easy to understand self-service guide will assist individuals looking to complete the expungement process without the need of legal assistance.
