Jenny Wilson is currently serving her second six-year term on the Salt Lake County Council. Jenny served her first At-Large term from 2005 – 2010, and was the first woman elected to the Salt Lake County Council. During that time Jenny spearheaded many policy initiatives, including ethics reform and open space preservation. She devised and passed an initiative that provided health benefits to the partners of LGBT county employees, and was a co-founder of the Jordan River Commission. Two of her principle assignments included serving as a member of the Council of Governments and as a Board Member of the Unified Fire Authority. Throughout her first term she prioritized government efficiency.
Jenny began working for and supporting candidates and elected officials early in her career and has experience at all levels of government. In 1991 she served at the federal level as Assistant Press Secretary to U.S. Rep. Les AuCoin (D-OR) and from 1992-1996 as Chief of Staff to U.S. Rep. Bill Orton (D-UT). She also assisted the Democratic Caucus of the Utah State Legislature in 1998 and was a candidate for Salt Lake City Mayor in 2007.
In addition to her service in government, Jenny has broad experience working in the private and non-profit sectors, including positions in administration, fundraising and project management for the Sundance Institute, Film Festival and Sundance Group; a professional position coordinating the training, management and retention of the over 20,000 volunteers for the Salt Lake City Olympic Winter Games of 2002; project and communications staff of “Covering Kids” a project of Voices for Utah Children; and more recently Executive Director of Institutional Advancement for the University of Utah’s John A. Moran Eye Center, where from 2010-2013 she oversaw the Center’s marketing, communications, fundraising and government relations. In 2013, Jenny completed a documentary film which she directed and produced, THE GRAND RESCUE, the story of a harrowing Grand Teton National Park rescue of stranded climbers in 1967. Her father, Ted Wilson was one of the rescuers. She currently serves as a leadership, public relations and media consultant in addition to her Council duties.
Raised in Salt Lake City, UT one of five children, Jenny is the daughter of Ted Wilson, Mayor of Salt Lake City from 1976-1985, and Kathy Wilson, an artist and small business owner. She graduated from East High School in 1983, the University of Utah in 1988, and received a Masters in Public Administration from the Harvard Kennedy School in 1998.
Jenny’s past and present board and committee assignments include: Sundance Institute Utah Advisory Committee; Board Member, Utah Museum of Fine Arts; Board Member, Discovery Gateway: Utah Children’s Museum; Board Member, Salt Lake Community Action.
Jenny and her husband, Trell Rohovit, have two sons. She enjoys the outdoors, independent film and a good novel.
