Pretrial Services

accountabilityPretrial detainees account for 60% of the inmate population in U.S. jails and the national cost of pretrial detention has been estimated at over $9 billion per year.

Pretrial Services has several functions:

  • Gather Information:  Jail Screener’s interview all defendant’s booked into jail and administer a risk assessment to determine release eligibility.  This information is then presented to the court during the defendant’s initial appearance.
  • Assess Risk:  Judges use risk information to help determine an appropriate release option that ensures community safety and the defendant’s appearance.
  • Provide Supervision: Pretrial supervision is effective in reducing failure to appear rates and new criminal activity.
