Salt Lake City, UT - The Salt Lake County Council passed a resolution on Tuesday, sponsored by councilmembers Shireen Ghorbani and Max Burdick, approving that the county moves forward to the next phase of the Community Renewable Energy Act. The Act, which passed the Utah Legislature in 2019, allows participating communities to explore the goal of being powered by 100 percent net renewable energy by 2030.

“One of my top priorities is to create a cleaner environment for our community,” said Salt Lake County Mayor Jenny Wilson. “Salt Lake County is eager to participate in the next phase, and I’m thrilled the Council is supporting this process.”

After December 31st, Salt Lake County and other communities will enter into a study phase with Rocky Mountain Power and State regulators to look at the cost and benefits of the program. Once that exploratory process is completed, the communities will decide whether to enter the program, and individual residents will have the ability to “opt-out” of the program.

“I’m proud to be a part of a council that supports renewable energy. Salt Lake County residents are deeply committed to the ethical stewardship of our environment and reversing the impacts of climate change. Passing this resolution is the first step in giving the residents of unincorporated Salt Lake County a choice on clean energy,” said Councilwomen Ghorbani.

“One of my biggest priorities is looking out for the future residents of Salt Lake County, whether it be criminal justice reform, transportation, or the environment. This resolution takes a big step in ensuring that our children will inherit a bright tomorrow,” said Councilman Max Burdick.

The Community Renewable Energy Act is a first of its kind legislation passed in partnership with Rocky Mountain Power, The State of Utah, and local communities. The study phase is expected to last one to two years.
