SALT LAKE COUNTY, Utah—The County Library celebrated Mexican heritage with more than 800 people at special Day of the Dead celebrations at two branches and ofrendas around the system on Friday.

“It’s cool that we’re doing this, and that we’re really doing it all-out,” Tyler branch manager Davie Bird said. “It’s not us just trying to do Halloween for Latinos. It’s día de los Muertos, and it’s for everyone.”

On Friday, the County Library’s Kearns and Tyler branches each hosted Día de los Muertos celebrations with food, face painting, music and dancing. Miktlanzihuatl, an Aztec dance group, performed at Tyler branch, while Mariachi Alma Ranchera de Utah, a local mariachi band, performed at Kearns branch.

As part of the celebration, both locations gave patrons the opportunity to commemorate a loved one on an ofrenda—a sort of altar upon which patrons left trinkets and other offerings. Attendees were given opportunity to watch the motion picture Coco, learn to paint faces in the traditional Catrina style, make crafts, play in a bounce house and purchase authentic Mexican food.

“It was fantastic,” Kearns branch manager Matt McLain said. “The face painting and mariachi performance were extremely popular, so we’ll see about extending those for next year.”

In previous years, the County Library’s Día de los Muertos celebration has taken place only at Kearns branch, and was expanded this year to accommodate patrons in Tyler’s Midvale area.
Día de los Muertos, or the Day of the Dead, is a Mexican celebration honoring deceased family members from October 31-November 2.

About the Día de los Muertos

Día de los Muertos, or Día de Muertos, is a holiday celebrated throughout Mexico and other places by people with Mexican heritage, with an emphasis on honoring deceased family members. A central part of Día de los Muertos is through an ofrenda, a sort of altar in the home where family members can leave trinkets and other offerings to honor their loved ones.
