SALT LAKE COUNTY, UT—Traditional choral melodies and professional Lion Dancers will wow revelers as they ring in the Year of the Rat during the County Library’s Lunar New Year celebration.

“We’re extremely excited about Lunar New Year,” said Senior Librarian Liesl Seborg. “It’s a great chance to learn about Asian culture and celebrate with friends and family.”

Guests will create Chinese calligraphy and learn how to write numerals in Thai, while experiencing the traditions of China, Korea, Vietnam, and more. Crafts and exhibits will also be included in the festivities.

The County Library is also hosting an augmented reality (AR) cultural expedition to further explain how Asian countries celebrate the holiday.

Unlike the Gregorian calendar, which is based on the sun, Lunar New Year is based on the lunar calendar, with each new year represented by an animal. The rat is known for its spirit, wit, alertness, delicacy, flexibility, and vitality.

WHAT: Lunar New Year
WHEN: Saturday, February 1, 1–4 pm
WHERE: Library’s Viridian Event Center (8030 S 1825 W)
