Education and Tours
"Education is the most powerful weapon we can use to change the world"

Why We Educate
Here at SlCo Recycling, we understand the importance of environmental education. If we can change the way people think about their trash and illustrate how easy and impactful recycling can be, then we can transform our community for the better.
We hope to see the world in a brighter, cleaner light someday, and we hope you do too!
That is why our Recycling Information Office provides guided landfill tours tailored to fit the needs and interests of your group. So whether you're an elementary school, university class, or business office seeking clarity on subjects such as recycling, landfill operation, or waste reduction and sustainability, we're at your service. Free of charge.
Want an up-close look at what happens to your trash each and every day? How about some fresh ideas on how you can lower your own trash impact?
Tours are offered Monday - Friday(9 am - 3 pm). Tours typically last 60-90 minutes. We can accomodate any size group with a minimum of 10 people. Recommended minimum age for participants is 7 years old (or attending the second grade).
Tours are broken into two parts:
- An indoor presentation covering Salt Lake Valley Landfill construction/management and the role countywide recycling efforts play in the operation and longevity of our landfill
- A driving tour of the landfill, visiting our green waste, household hazardous waste (HHW) facility, citizen unloading area, the landfill tipping face, an old Salt Lake County Landfill and (upon request/time allowing) our composting area.
Things to Remember
Our tour is a driving tour utilizing group vehicles. We do not provide transportation for the driving portion. We ask that your consolidate into one vehicle if possible, or at least as few vehicles as possible. And please remember to save a seat for your tour guide!
Restroom facilities are available in our education building (where the first portion of the presentation takes place), but not during the 30-minute driving tour.
Typically, tours conclude at the Lee Kay ponds wildlife area across the street from the landfill. Time allowing, groups will have a change to exit vehicles and visit the gazebo and observation deck, which also makes for a great snack spot!
