We're Seeking Salt Lake County Residents for these 4 Commissions & Councils Critical to our Community

There are a number of opportunities to volunteer in the community. Right now, we're in great need of applicants for the following commissions and councils:

  • Salt Lake County Planning Commission
  • Mountainous Planning District Planning Commission
  • Community and Economic Development Advisory Council
  • Community and Support Services Advisory Council

What do these bodies do? And how do you know which might fit your skills and needs best?

Salt Lake County Planning Commission

The Planning Commission meets monthly and makes recommendations to the County Council on general plans, zoning ordinances, and more. Check out past meeting agendas for an idea of what it's currently been reviewing.

Applicants need to be full-time Salt Lake County residents and ideally have a background in:

  • Architecture
  • Engineering
  • Law
  • Planning
  • Real estate
  • Great Salt Lake & its wetlands
  • Land development
  • Transportation

How to Apply

  1. Visit https://slco.org/boards and find "Salt Lake County Planning Commission". Click on it and then click "Apply". 
  2. Fill out a conflict of interest form.
  3. Email your resume of related experience to Wendy Gurr or Jake Young.

Mountainous Planning District Planning Commission

This differs from the County Planning Commission because the Mountainous Planning District Planning Commission focuses on recommending policies to preserve our mountain environment, enhance quality of life, and manage uses in the mountains. 

We're seeking applicants from Sandy, Salt Lake City, Alta or Brighton, and alternates. It also meets monthly.

Like the County Planning Commission, applicants ideally have a background in:

  • Architecture
  • Engineering
  • Law
  • Planning
  • Real estate
  • Great Salt Lake & its wetlands
  • Land development
  • Transportation

  2. Fill out a conflict of interest form.
  3. Email a resume of experience to Jake Young.

Community and Economic Development Advisory Council

This Council provides a critical public service by making critical  recommendations on grants to give to community organizations providing programs, funded by the Community Development Block Grant Program.

Council efforts include:

  • Increasing affordable housing inventory for all Salt Lake County residents
  • Reviewing applications from municipalities and nonprofits in weekly meetings
  • Recommending grants to help expand affordable housing, housing rehabilitation, economic development, and more.

Volunteers serve for two years and meet weekly from February-April. We're seeking seven new members.

Community and Support Services Advisory Council

This Council differs from CEDAC in that it focuses on a variety of grants and funding sources for support services. Council members:

  • Ensure affordable housing and housing stability of all Salt Lake County residents
  • Review applications for grants to agencies that provide social services, via weekly meetings
  • Recommend grants to help domestic violence, homeless prevention, refugee resettlement, and more

The Council meets weekly, generally from just February-April each year. There are currently five vacancies that need to be filled.
