Kendo is the art of Japanese fencing. Students learn proper etiquette, safety, correct footwork, offensive techniques as well as defensive techniques. A Kendo practice is composed of many types of training. Kendo, like other martial arts requires discipline and a dedication to training. A new student begins with learning the basics such as: etiquette (reigi), different postures and footwork, and how to properly swing a sword. The student progresses through a series of skills preparing them to begin training with armor (bogu). Kendo equipment consists of the swords, uniform and armor. Please contact the instructor before attending the first class so he knows to bring an extra shinai (bamboo sword).

Iaido is a modern Japanese martial art. Iaido is associated with the smooth, controlled movements of drawing the sword from its scabbard or saya, striking or cutting an imaginary opponent, removing blood from the blade (chiburi), and then replacing the sword in the scabbard. While new practitioners of Iaido may start learning with a wooden sword (bokken) depending on the teaching style of a particular instructor, most of the practitioners use the blunt edged sword, called iaito. Iaido forms (kata) are performed individually against one or more imaginary opponents.
