Your Role in the Process

Graphic showing steps of expungement process, highlighting step one of the process.

Expungement is a long and complicated process.

Each client you assist will be at the beginning of the expungement process.  Each person who has signed up desires to clear their criminal record but they don’t know whether they are eligible and don’t know how to proceed with the process.

Your goal is to assist the client by reviewing their criminal history and determine whether they are eligible.  If they are eligible, you will notify the Mayor's Office of Criminal Justice Initiatives that this individual is ready to submit an application for expungement. If an individual is not eligible, you will provide advice and information on what needs to happen before they can become eligible.   In the scenario where a “402 reduction” (a motion to reduce the severity of the conviction level) is the appropriate “fix”, you will assist the individual with that motion.

Note: it will take the Bureau of Criminal Identification 90 days to respond to applications once submitted.
