Developing and implementing a plan to properly manage flood hazards is one of the keys responsibilities of governmental agencies and planners. The Engineering Division of the Salt Lake County Public Works Department is responsible for oversight and maintenance of most of the canals and creeks in Salt Lake County that are utilized for flood control and storm water management (often referred to as County-wide flood control facilities).
Salt Lake County maintains joint-use agreements with some canal companies, allowing for limited use of canals for storm water conveyance. The Engineering Division is responsible for the planning, engineering design, permitting, and construction of flood control improvements on County-wide flood control facilities.
