Waste and Recycling

The Salt Lake Valley's population has been growing fast and steadily for years. As of 2022, Salt Lake County is home to more than 1.2 million people, spread throughout 21 major cities and towns and additional unincorporated communities. Due to the increasing number of residents the need for waste and recycling is distributed through a handful of providers.

If you have questions about waste or recycling in your own city, town, or community, please contact the organization responsible for collecting your curbside recycling can. Not sure who that is?  Looking to set up recycling at your home for the first time?

What is Salt Lake County Doing?

The Salt Lake Valley Landfill is an important resource to all county residents. Help us preserve the landfill by doing your part to reduce, reuse and recycle your waste.

We collect methane – a greenhouse gas – from the landfill and send it to be used as fuel. The energy generated from this process powers 3,000 homes in Murray City.

The Salt Lake Valley landfill processes 40 thousand tons of green waste into compost each year!
