Canyon and Unincorporated Patrol

The Canyon & Unincorporated Patrol division provides comprehensive law enforcement services within unincorporated Salt Lake County and the canyon areas, including Big and Little Cottonwood Canyons, Emigration Canyon, East Canyon, Lambs Canyon, Millcreek Canyon, Butterfield Canyon, and other mountainous areas. These deputies conduct follow-up investigations for property crimes occurring within these canyons. While not densely populated, these areas are highly frequented by tourists and visitors, receiving millions of visitors annually, comparable to Yellowstone National Park.

The unique environment of the canyons requires specialized skills beyond those of the average patrol deputy. Canyon & Unincorporated deputies receive training in the use of snowmobiles, all-terrain vehicles, avalanche transceivers, and helicopter operations, among others. They are equipped to handle a wide variety of emergency and rescue calls. The unit works collaboratively with the U.S. Forest Service, Unified Fire Authority, Unified Police Department, the Town of Alta, Salt Lake City Division of Water Quality, Utah Department of Transportation Avalanche Forecasters, Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) road crews, air medical helicopters, Wasatch Powderbird Guides, Wasatch Backcountry Rescue, and the ski patrols of local resorts.

Additionally, the Canyon & Unincorporated Patrol oversees the administration of the Salt Lake County Sheriff's Office Search and Rescue team.

Canyon Patrol officers also perform community-oriented policing duties. They serve as liaisons with ski resorts and community councils, fostering strong relationships and ensuring effective communication within the community.
